To pay tribute to their father and husband Paul Golay after his death in 1951, Alice Rivaz and Ida Golay selected various texts (articles, comments, satires, diatribes, chronicles, speeches) written and delivered in the course of more than forty years of his political and public life. The 300-page collection published at the end of the year displays in four parts his feature articles, satirical texts, and speeches he addressed to the canton of Vaud Grand Conseil (cantonal parliament) and, finally, eulogies from his funeral and obituary articles.
Edmond Privat’s preface endorses this outstanding speaker, whose eloquence, satirical spirit, wit, and style were highly appreciated by his colleagues. Edmond Privat mentions the filiation at the beginning of his preface:
The fact that one of our best novelists, Alice Rivaz, is the daughter of Paul Golay partly explains her considerable talent, an aptitude Edmond Jaloux admired. For her father had immense talent. If he had not devoted his entire life to defending the destitute, he could have had a brilliant literary career.
Paul Golay did actually write a play, Le Calvaire (1913). Just like many of his writings (over 7000 articles and parliamentary contributions), it denounced injustice towards the most vulnerable, and the miserable conditions in which they lived.
In the 1980s, Alice Rivaz wrote to her publisher proposing a reprint of Terre de Justice. However, her wish was not granted, and the book remains unavailable to this day.
